Real Bone Broth vs Powdered Bone Broth: What's The Difference?
Share
Bone broths have been through a massive transformation in the last ten years. From a slow-cooked traditional recipe to powder forms, concentrated bone broths and even grains prepared in bone broth, these items now fill the aisles of many supermarkets across Australia.
The evolution continues today, and bone broth is now appearing in places few of us would have imagined a decade ago, from gravies and flavoured bone broth beverages to chocolate bone broths and dehydrated bone broth powders on supermarket shelves nationwide.More than ever, the bone broth category has evolved and diversified, encompassing a wide range of ingredients, production methods and product formats.
Though the range of innovative and convenient bone broth has increased the number of bone broth products available on shelves and to consumers, they have also resulted in quite distinct definitions of what constitutes a 'bone broth'.
How the Bone Broth Market Has Changed
The marketplace for bone broth was extremely different when I was initially developing and selling products. Back then, most bone broth products with a long shelf life came in powdered form, with very few ready to drink liquid broths available on the market.I was super curiousabout the category and spent a lot of time learning about how different bone broth products were made, how they were manufactured and what made them different from one another. The more I learned about the manufacturing processes behind the various bone broth products on the market, the more I realised there were significant differences between categories. Many powdered bone broth products are produced using dehydration methods that create a shelf stable product that's easy to transport, store and prepare. Some also contain dehydrated vegetables, flavourings or other ingredients formulated to create an instant broth when mixed with water.
There's absolutely a place for powdered bone broth. It's convenient to keep in the cupboard, easy to travel with, and for many people, it's a simple introduction to trying bone broth products.
Why I Personally Prefer Traditional Liquid Bone Broth
For me personally, however, I kept finding myself reverting back to the flavour, texture and all-round experience that you achieve with a traditional liquid broth.
My favourite aspect of slow-cooked liquid bone broth is the flavour and complexity which is created organically through the cooking process. It’s a totally different mouth-feel than the powdered versions available. When you slowly simmer bones, vegetables and water together, you create a depth of flavour and texture that's much closer to a traditional homemade stock. It feels less like mixing something up and more like the kind of stock that's been made in kitchens for generations.
It reminds me of the traditional stock many of us grew up with. Slowly simmered for hours, filling the kitchen with rich aromas, building flavour over time, and bringing a sense of warmth that goes beyond what's in the bowl.
Understanding the Nutritional Differences
Also, with greater time spent in the category, I grew to have more of an interest in the nutrition of the various products.
Another thing worth paying attention to is protein content. Not all bone broth products contain the same amount of protein, and the difference can be surprisingly large. Depending on the product, you may need several servings to match the protein found in a single serve of traditional liquid bone broth.
Neither type is inherently better or worse than the other. It simply highlights the importance of checking the label and understanding exactly what you're purchasing.
Why We Chose Traditional Liquid Broth at The Broth Sisters
At The Broth Sisters, we chose to focus on traditionally prepared liquid bone broth because it was the kind of broth we genuinely wanted to drink ourselves and serve to our families.
We wanted the convenience of ready made bone broth, but we also wanted the flavour, aroma and satisfaction of a traditional stock that had been slowly simmered over time. Something nourishing and practical, yet enjoyable enough to sip from a mug and savour.
For us, bone broth was never just about nutrition. It was about creating a product people would look forward to drinking. A moment to pause during a busy day. The warmth in your hands, the rich aroma, the depth of flavour and the comfort that comes with a properly made broth.
We wanted to create food as medicine that didn't taste like medicine.Something people come back to because they genuinely love the experience. A bone broth people reach for because they love the flavour, aroma and comfort, not just because someone told them it's good for them.
As much as we love the idea of simmering bones for days and making real bone broth from scratch, the reality is that most of us are already stretched thin. Between work, family commitments and the mental load that so many women carry, finding the time to manage large cooking pots and clean up afterwards simply isn't realistic for everyday life.
Having ready made liquid bone broth available off the shelf allows people to enjoy the flavour, comfort and nourishment of a traditionally prepared broth, even in the middle of a modern busy life.
A Philosophy Built Around Simplicity and Nourishment
Our philosophy is simple: never compromise on flavour, quality or tradition. We believe bone broth should be as enjoyable as it is nourishing, bringing together the comfort of a slowly simmered broth with the convenience needed for modern life.
Because we believe nourishing yourself should be simple and enjoyable, not just another thing on your to do list.
While bone broth powders, concentrates and liquid bone broths all have their place, for us, nothing quite compares to the comfort of a warm mug of classic, slow simmered bone broth made the traditional way.
FAQs
Q1 What are the nutritional values of powdered vs liquid bone broth?
The nutritional values of powdered and liquid bone broth can vary significantly from brand to brand. Factors such as the ingredients used, production methods and protein content all influence the final nutritional profile.
Powdered bone broth products are often more concentrated, while traditional liquid bone broth is typically valued for its flavour, texture and similarity to a slow cooked homemade broth. The best way to compare products is to check the nutrition panel and ingredient list, as there can be considerable differences between brands.
Q2 What makes traditional liquid bone broth so much richer?
One of the reasons traditional liquid bone broth feels so much richer is the time that goes into making it. As the broth slowly simmers for hours, fats, gelatin and flavours are naturally released into the liquid, creating a deeper flavour, a more satisfying texture and the characteristic "sticky" mouthfeel many people associate with a homemade broth.
Because powdered bone broth products are produced differently, the drinking experience can be quite different, even when both products contain similar ingredients.
Q3 Is bone broth powder more convenient?
Powdered bone broth can be convenient for travel and pantry storage. For those looking for the comfort and experience of a traditional broth, liquid bone broth is ready to heat and enjoy, whether that's in a mug on a cold day, as a cooking stock or as the foundation of a nourishing meal.
Q4 What is the ideal protein amount for bone broth?
There's no magic number when it comes to protein in bone broth. What is important to understand is that protein content can vary dramatically from one bone broth product to the next.
If protein is one of the reasons you're choosing bone broth, take a close look at the nutrition panel. Some bone broth products contain relatively small amounts of protein per serve, while traditionally prepared liquid bone broth may provide significantly more protein per cup. That's why it's always worth comparing the nutrition panel rather than assuming all bone broth products are the same.
Q5 What made The Broth Sisters select liquid bone broth?
When we created The Broth Sisters, our goal was to produce the highest quality, best tasting liquid bone broth we could. We wanted to create a bone broth that people would genuinely enjoy drinking, not just because it was good for them, but because it delivered on flavour, aroma, texture and comfort.
For us, the appeal of a traditional bone broth has always been the experience. The rich flavour that develops when a broth is left to simmer for hours, the aroma that fills the kitchen, and the feeling of wrapping your hands around a warm mug of home cooked broth.
While powdered bone broth products have their place, they never quite delivered that experience for us personally. We wanted to give people access to a ready to consume bone broth that felt closer to the traditional way of enjoying broth, while still fitting into modern life.
That's why we chose liquid bone broth. It allowed us to capture the flavour and comfort of home cooked broth in a convenient, ready to consume format.
